I've never had a massage.  What happens during my massage appointment?

At your first massage appointment, you will fill out a health form and then discuss any goals for the massage session (to relax, relieve tension in your neck, increase range of motion from an injury, etc).  The massage therapist will then leave the room, giving you time to undress to your comfort level and get on the table and under the sheets.

What should I wear during my massage session?

You will be given privacy to undress to your comfort level.  For a lot of people, this means undressing down to their underwear.  Some people choose to go without any clothing at all.  No matter what you decide to wear during the session, you will be properly covered and draped with the sheet at all times.

Do I need to make an appointment?

Yes, all massage sessions at Bella Vita Massage are by appointment only.  The easiest way to book your appointment is to click the black "Book My Appointment" button on our Home Page.

What type of massage should I schedule?

When making an appointment at Bella Vita, you will want to consider your goals for the massage session.  If you are simply wanting to relax and relieve general tension, then an hour long Swedish massage will usually do the trick .  A 30 minute session is great for focusing in on one problem area, such as a kink in your neck, or tight hamstrings.  However, if you have more than one problem area, or would like general work on the rest of your body as well, then we suggest scheduling for a 60 or 90 minute appointment.  At Bella Vita, we charge the same price for Swedish and Deep Tissue because many times, we will do a little of both techniques, depending on the client's needs for that session.

Why do I need to drink water after my massage?

Massage manipulates the muscular system, which also effects many other systems such as the lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and skeletal systems.  This temporarily speeds up your body's detoxification process, much like exercise.  When the body detoxes, it is important to get plenty of water to ensure that you do not get dehydrated.  It is also helpful to drink plenty of water before your massage as well.

What could have caused the tension in my neck/shoulders/back, etc?

It is difficult to know exactly what your pain or tension is from without following you around 24/7.  While your massage therapist would be happy to discuss possible causes and solutions for your problem, another great way to help identify the cause is to practice regular self-awareness.  A good way to make this a habit is to set aside a few days and set an alarm on your phone that goes off every hour.  When the alarm goes off, make a quick note of how you are feeling.  Are you shoulders high and forward from hunching over a computer?  Do you have a headache?  Are you leg muscles tired?  Then think through your actions during the last hour and look for any possible causes for your discomfort.  Have you been sitting at a desk all morning?  Did you lift heavy boxes with incorrect form?  Many people find that simply making note of their physical posture and actions through out the day can help identify possible causes for their pain or discomfort.

What kind of oil/lotion do you use?

For most massage sessions, unscented Jojoba lotion is used.

Can I work out after I get a massage?

Yes.  However, I do not recommend working out immediately after a massage, and highly suggest scheduling for a time when you can rest your body for 12-24 hours following your massage.  There is no danger in working out after a massage (provided you continue drinking enough water), but giving your body extra time to rest and enjoy the effects of the massage is recommended.
